A referee in terms of job application is a credible person willing to testify even in writing about the character or ability of a job applicant therefore a reference can be a letter from a previous employer testifying to someone’s ability or reliability. It’s habitual to have referees on your CV.

Types of reference

Various kinds of references or referees can be used and you should choose these carefully.

Job reference

A job reference is normally given by any organization or manager you have worked for and confirms that you occupied a named job and that you completed work stated.

Professional referee

A professional referee is a person who will confirm your professional skills and knowledge. They are typically a person who managed you in the past although they may also be someone from a professional body who is confirming that you have reached a certain professional status and certification.

Personal referee

A personal referee is a person who knows you personally and will give a statement or talk with the recruiter about your character and personality. Typically they will confirm your integrity, work ethic, intelligence and so on.

Academic reference

An academic reference is one from a university or academic body and confirms that you have gained specific academic qualifications. It may also confirm further academic study and that you have had academic papers and other works published.

Job reference

I remember  a time when I was call by another employer if i knew someone who had indicated me as a referee on their CV, i was indeed first and glad to recommend them simply because I was informed prior that I had been indicated as a referee and secondly because they were indeed dedicated at work.

Conclusively, Be in line with your references. Tell them about the job you’re applying for and ask if they would be willing to recommend you for it. If you can’t use your former boss, find someone else at the company that you worked with. For those looking for their first job, educational references are worthwhile don’t ignore this section for even if your prospective employer does not contact them, it shows that you are a credible person that has someone who can endorse your ability or reliability.
