What do you do when your manager discovers you've been making a mistake for quite some time?

So you've been working on an assignment for a couple of years and your manager just found out that part of it is incorrect. That's got to be really frustrating! But it's important to approach the situation in a professional and constructive way. Here's what you can do:

First, acknowledge the error. It's important to take responsibility for your mistake and not try to shift blame to others. Apologize if the mistake has caused any problems or inconveniences for your manager or others.

Next, try to figure out the root cause of the error. Why did it happen and what could you have done differently to prevent it? This will help you avoid making similar mistakes in the future.

You should also communicate with your manager about the situation. Explain what happened and see if they have any guidance on how to correct the error and move forward. If it affects previously issued financial statements, you'll also need to determine whether the difference is material.

Once you have a plan to correct the error, work with your manager to make it happen. And once it's all done, take some time to reflect on the situation. What can you learn from it and how can you prevent similar mistakes in the future?

It's important to remember that mistakes are a natural part of the learning and development process. What's most important is how you handle and learn from them.
