StrongMinds Uganda (www.strongminds.org) is a Kampala-based, non-governmental organization that focuses on one of the most underserved populations and one of the most pervasive mental illnesses in the world. We treat depression among women, and we are guided by a goal to treat two million depressed African women by the end of 2025.
We currently operate in four districts of Uganda, a post-conflict and highly impoverished country where 1 out of every 4 adults suffers from depression. As the only organization with a model specifically designed to scale a solution for depression in Sub-Saharan Africa, we provide a simple, innovative and cost-effective approach. Group interpersonal psychotherapy, facilitated by trained community workers, is a proven model which helps depressed women return to and maintain their full mental health and restores their ability to care for their families.
StrongMinds Uganda (SMU) is closely affiliated with StrongMinds, a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) social enterprise organization headquartered in Maplewood, New Jersey.
